How to move a fridge or washing machine safely
Appliances are heavy and easy to damage. A few minutes of preparation protects both the machine and your floors.
Fridge or freezer
- Empty it completely and defrost it the day before, then dry the inside.
- Secure the doors and shelves so nothing swings open or slides around.
- Ideally it travels upright. Once it's in place, check the manufacturer's instructions on how long to wait before switching it on.
Washing machine
- Turn off the taps, disconnect the hoses and let the machine drain fully.
- If you still have the transit bolts, fit them to lock the drum. If not, mention it so it can be handled carefully.
- Tape the power cord and hoses to the machine so they don't drag or get caught.
Before moving day
- Measure doorways, hallways and stairs, and the machine itself, to make sure it will fit.
- Tell your removalist if there are stairs or tight corners so the right number of people are sent.
